-
- Jean Grolier, vicomte d'Aguisy, 1479-1565, was a French bibliophile
- and patron of writers and printers. Between 1499 and 1521 he was
- treasurer of the French army in Italy and of the French duchy of
- Milan, and he later became treasurer-general of France. He was a
- friend and patron of Aldus Manutius, a Venetian master printer,
- editor, and publisher who specialized in Greek and Latin texts.
-
- Grolier's library, which was dispersed in 1676, contained about 3,000
- volumes, of which 561 are known to exist today. Their bindings are of
- fine leather decorated with geometric designs tooled in gold and
- bright colors. Grolier was well known for his generosity, and the
- volumes contain the inscription, "belonging to Jean Grolier and his
- friends"; some also contain his motto, "Lord, may my portion be in
- the land of the living." He also amassed a large and famous collection
- of medals and coins.
